New Media

Apparently this is all the rage in the academic communication world. I'm obviously way behind.

I remember reading my first blog about 4 years ago and today is the day I'll begin. I think if I hear the words "new media" one more time in my professional or academic circle I'll scream. When will "new" be eliminated and "media" will just be "media"? I don't quite understand the diffusion of "new media", but i hope it catches on quickly, not so that journalism because uncredible or that education professionals lose their jobs, but mostly so that we can move on and accept the new form of news reporting that's expected to take place.

The idea that we can use blogs, wiki's, podcasts, etc is thrilling. To think that anyone, anywhere can decide what's newsworthy is interesting and scary. How will credibility be established and at what point does society stop believing gossip? Will this change government roles in spreading information? How will these changes affect society? I'm curious.
